On February 3, 2022, 11-year-old Darius Darnell D.J. Dugas was tragically shot and killed while grabbing his coat from his family's car at their apartment complex in northeast Harris County, Houston, Texas. Darius, a young boy of African American ethnicity, was simply retrieving his jacket during a winter storm when he was caught in the crossfire of a violent robbery.
The suspect, 19-year-old Daveyonne Howard, was allegedly breaking into vehicles in the apartment complex parking lot when
the car owner confronted him. In a panic, Howard opened fire, and one of the bullets struck Darius in the chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Darius succumbed to his injuries.
Daveyonne Howard was later arrested and charged with murder. He had an extensive criminal history, including charges of aggravated robbery, and was out on bond at the time of the shooting. In November 2024, Howard pleaded guilty to the murder of Darius and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. The judge noted that Howard's actions showed a disregard for children's safety, and the lengthy sentence was deemed appropriate to serve justice for Darius.
The tragic incident left the community in mourning, and Darius' family has been vocal about seeking justice for their beloved son. Darius was remembered as a smart, respectful, and kind young boy who was loved by all who knew him. His father, Darius Dugas Sr., expressed his grief and disbelief, stating that he never imagined such a tragedy would befall his family.
The case drew significant attention, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office emphasized that justice was served for Darius and his family. The community continues to remember Darius and honor his memory, hoping that such senseless acts of violence can be prevented in the future.
