Tyshawn James Groves, a 31-year-old man from Haslet, Texas, tragically lost his life on February 5, 2022, in Arlington, Texas. Groves was involved in a dispute over cell phones that led to his untimely death. According to reports, Groves had asked Jacob Yi, a 22-year-old man, to purchase iPhones for him at an AT&T store on South Cooper Street. Groves promised to pay Yi for his part in the purchase.
After buying the phones and receiving payment from Groves, Yi attempted to leave with the phones and Groves' debit card. When Groves confronted him, Yi shot him multiple times, resulting in Groves' death.
A 29-year-old man who was with Groves at the time was also shot and suffered serious injuries, though they were not thought to be life-threatening. Yi was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a felon. In August 2024, Yi pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
