Thayrion Mason, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting on February 10, 2022, in Irving, Texas. The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Ranch Trail. Mason was stopped at a red light in the center lane when a suspect vehicle, believed to be a 2018 Toyota Corolla with dark tinted windows and covered license plates, pulled up beside him in the left lane.
A passenger in the front seat of the Corolla leaned out of the window and fired multiple rounds into Mason's vehicle. Mason was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Irving Police Department has been actively investigating the case, releasing surveillance video of the suspect's vehicle and appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Detective David Gorski of the Irving Police Department mentioned that Mason was targeted for an unknown reason. Doorbell and surveillance video from local businesses captured the suspect's vehicle following Mason out of his apartment complex before the shooting occurred. The vehicle was later seen turning eastbound on South Valley Ranch Parkway.
Mason had only lived in his apartment in Irving for about a month before the incident. His parents, Khrystal and Kendrick Chavis, described him as a normal 19-year-old who loved basketball and had graduated with honors. The family has been struggling with the loss, experiencing sleepless nights and stress, knowing that the killer or killers are still at large. The Irving Police Department continues to seek information from the public to help bring closure to Mason's family.
