Crawford was targeted by two teenagers, Miguel Angel Martinez, 17, and an unnamed 16-year-old, who attempted to rob him while he was sitting in his car in front of his home. The incident occurred in the early morning hours, and the suspects admitted to police that they had gone out looking to rob someone.
During the robbery, Crawford resisted, and the 16-year-old suspect, who was on the
ground fighting with Crawford, told Martinez to shoot him. Martinez then fired the fatal shot, killing Crawford, and also shot 16-year-old Demorius Ducking in the face when he came outside to help Crawford. Ducking, who recognized the suspects as his schoolmates, survived the shooting and provided police with their names.
Following the shooting, the suspects fled to a nearby home, where they were quickly located by police. One of the suspects surrendered immediately, while the other was taken into custody after a short standoff involving SWAT officers. Both teenagers were charged with capital murder and aggravated assault.
