According to police reports, Joshua was meeting with several teenagers for a drug transaction when the situation escalated into a robbery attempt. A shootout ensued, and Joshua was fatally shot in the front and back.
One of the suspects, a 15-year-old, was also shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other two suspects fled the scene on foot.

An arrest was made over a year later on April 5, 2023, when Marcus Haynes, 18, was taken into custody in Wharton County and charged with murder. Haynes was identified as one of the suspects involved in the shooting. Despite the arrest, two juvenile suspects remain at large, and the investigation is ongoing. The Harris County District Attorney's Office filed a murder warrant on March 31, 2023, leading to Haynes' arrest.
