Destiney Jassmund Carey, a 33-year-old African American woman, was tragically shot and killed on April 7, 2022, in Copperas Cove, Texas. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when the Copperas Cove Police Department received a 911 call from the 1000 block of Hobby Road. Upon arrival, officers found Carey and another individual, 37-year-old Kevin Frazier, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Carey was pronounced dead at the scene, while Frazier was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Carey was a hardworking small business owner and a nurse, known for her joyful personality and dedication to her family. She owned two businesses in Killeen and was in the process of setting up a third location in Dallas. Her 18-year-old daughter, D'Zira Cannon, described her mother as a fun and loving person who always wanted to be happy and brought joy to those around her.
The investigation into Carey's death led to the arrest of her boyfriend, Kevin Frazier, who was charged with her murder. According to the arrest affidavit, officers heard screaming and gunshots coming from inside the residence when they arrived. Frazier's account of the events was inconsistent with the evidence and the injuries sustained by Carey, as described by the medical examiner. Frazier, who had served 11 years in the United States Army, was taken into custody after being treated for his injuries at the hospital.
Frazier faced additional charges of assault against a public servant, as one of the bullets fired during the incident passed through a window and injured an officer. His bond was set at $1,000,000 for the murder charge and $750,000 for the assault charge.
