As the occupants evacuated to escape the flames, the perpetrator ambushed them with a shotgun, leading to the fatalities. Emergency services received multiple 911 calls around 1:07 a.m., reporting both the fire and the shootings. Houston Fire Department crews were the first to arrive but faced immediate gunfire, forcing them to retreat. Upon the arrival of the Houston Police Department, the suspect was still armed and posed a threat. A responding officer engaged the shooter, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot at the scene. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later identified one of the victims as 69-year-old Morris Washington.
