Deputy Sheriff Houston Mitchell, aged 46, was shot and killed on July 11, 1904, while attempting to stop illegal gambling in Memphis, Tennessee. Mitchell and Deputy Sheriff Thomas McDermott were raiding a club at 42 DeSoto Avenue when they were both shot. McDermott succumbed to his wounds the following day. During the raid, more than 40 suspects were arrested, and five were charged with murder. However, only one suspect was tried for murder and was subsequently acquitted.
