Nelson I. Hess, V, a 35-year-old male police officer with the Chattanooga Police Department, tragically lost his life on June 12, 1978. Officer Hess and his colleague, Officer David Friederichsen, responded to a domestic disturbance call on Conner Street. Just two minutes after their arrival, the suspect opened fire, striking both officers. Officer Hess was killed at the scene, while Officer Friederichsen succumbed to his injuries three days later at a local hospital.
