Investigations into the incident revealed a shocking truth: the person responsible for Forester's death was
his own mother, Dorothea Sweeten. In a devastating turn of events, Sweeten also took the life of her husband, Tom Sweeten, on the same day. In the face of questioning, she reportedly claimed her actions were born from a distorted sense of love and fear for her son's future. She expressed a belief that due to his intellectual disability, no one else would be capable of caring for him.
Following the killings, Dorothea Sweeten was charged with the murders of both her son and her husband.
