On a quiet Sunday evening, April 6, 1997, the lives of the Lillelid family were irrevocably shattered in a horrific act of violence in Greene County, Tennessee. Vidar Lillelid, a 34-year-old male, his wife Delfina, 28, their 6-year-old daughter Tabitha, and 2-year-old son Peter were returning home to Powell, Tennessee, from a Jehovah's Witnesses conference. The family made a stop at a rest area along Interstate 81, a seemingly insignificant decision that placed them in the path of a group of six young people from Kentucky.
This group, consisting of Natasha Cornett, 18, Edward Dean Mullins, 19, Joseph Lance Risner, 20, Crystal Rena Sturgill, 18, Jason Blake Bryant, 14, and Karen R. Howell, 17, were on a journey to New Orleans. Their paths fatefully crossed with the Lillelids at the rest stop. What began as a carjacking quickly escalated into a kidnapping. The Lillelid family was forced into their own van and driven to a secluded, rural road known as Payne Hollow Lane.
On that desolate stretch of road, Vidar, Delfina, Tabitha, and Peter were forced out of their vehicle and shot multiple times before being left in a ditch. Vidar and Delfina died at the scene. Tabitha was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Miraculously, young Peter, despite being shot, survived the brutal assault. The perpetrators then fled in the Lillelid's van, their journey of violence continuing as they headed towards the Mexican border.
The stolen van, however, would be their undoing. Two days after the murders, U.S. Customs agents apprehended all six suspects as they attempted to cross the border in Arizona. Inside the vehicle, authorities found personal belongings of the Lillelid family, including toys belonging to the children. The suspects were extradited back to Tennessee to face justice for their heinous crimes.
Faced with overwhelming evidence, all six individuals pleaded guilty to felony murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping. Each received multiple life sentences for their roles in the deaths of Vidar, Delfina, and Tabitha Lillelid, and the attempted murder of Peter. The case left a lasting scar on the community of Greeneville and brought to a tragic end the lives of a young family, leaving a lone survivor to carry the weight of that devastating night.
