Derrick Deshaun Jones Jr., a 25-year-old African American male, was spending his evening in the Westport entertainment district of Kansas City, Missouri, on October 22, 2016. Around 11:30 p.m., he was sitting in a vehicle parked behind the Sun Fresh grocery store near the 4000 block of Mill Street, accompanied by his brother and a friend. The group was approached by two individuals who confronted them in the parking lot, initiating a tense encounter that would soon turn fatal.
