Derrick Deshaun Jones Jr., a 25-year-old African American male, was spending his evening in the Westport entertainment district of Kansas City, Missouri, on October 22, 2016. Around 11:30 p.m., he was sitting in a vehicle parked behind the Sun Fresh grocery store near the 4000 block of Mill Street, accompanied by his brother and a friend. The group was approached by two individuals who confronted them in the parking lot, initiating a tense encounter that would soon turn fatal.
The
assailants demanded the men’s belongings, reportedly shouting orders for them to hand over everything they had. Although Jones and his companions complied with the robbery demands, the situation escalated when the perpetrators were not satisfied with what they had received. A struggle ensued during the confrontation, and Jones was struck by gunfire. The attackers then fled the scene in the victims' vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned at a separate location. Emergency responders transported Jones to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper body, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Investigators combing the crime scene discovered a crucial piece of evidence: a discarded white Styrofoam cup with a straw. Surveillance footage from the area captured one of the suspects carrying a similar cup shortly before the shooting. Forensic analysis later matched DNA found on the straw to Tyre L. Jackson, a 26-year-old man who was already a convicted felon. Further evidence solidified the connection when shell casings recovered from the murder scene were matched to a. 45-caliber handgun found in Jackson's vehicle during his arrest months later in December 2016.
Tyre Jackson was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and armed criminal action in connection with the death. Prosecutors built a case around the DNA evidence and ballistics, leading Jackson to eventually plead guilty to the charges. In court, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the robbery and killing. Authorities noted that a second suspect was also believed to be involved in the ambush, though the primary focus of the public legal proceedings centered on Jackson’s identification through the forensic trail left behind at the scene.
