In a tragic event that unfolded in Smyrna, Tennessee, 32-year-old Justin Bennett, a male resident of Davidson County, died on January 16, 2014, in what authorities determined to be a murder-suicide. The incident, which also resulted in the death of 28-year-old Kayleigh Dupont, took place at the Village Lake Apartments located off Jefferson Pike.
The events leading up to the deaths began with a domestic dispute.
According to the investigation, Bennett forcibly entered the apartment by kicking in the front door. He then confronted Dupont in an upstairs bathroom where he shot her before taking his own life. The Smyrna Police Department had responded to a domestic violence call at the same apartment just two days prior to the fatal incident.
When officers arrived at the scene on the evening of January 16th, they discovered a small child, approximately two to three years of age, unharmed inside the apartment. The child was subsequently placed in the care of state custody. The investigation into the deaths concluded that the murder-suicide was the result of the preceding domestic dispute, and as such, no arrests were made and there were no additional suspects.
