In the winter of 2014, a dispute between several men in Madison, Tennessee, erupted in gunfire, leaving one man dead. The victim was Jamahl Saunders, a 25-year-old Black male, who was fatally shot on February 10, 2014, on Berwick Trail. The incident was not a one-sided attack but rather a violent exchange of bullets. Evidence from the scene suggested that at least two individuals were actively shooting when Saunders was struck and killed.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex and dangerous situation. According to police reports, Saunders and another man, identified as 22-year-old Darius Montez Tate, had allegedly initiated the conflict by opening fire on two other men who were sitting in a car across the street. During the ensuing shootout, Saunders was caught in the crossfire and sustained a fatal wound. The underlying cause of this violent encounter was an ongoing dispute among the four men involved.
Following the deadly shooting, law enforcement identified Darius Montez Tate as a primary suspect in the death of Jamahl Saunders. Members of the Metro SWAT team were able to locate and apprehend Tate without incident. He was subsequently charged with one count of reckless homicide for his role in the death of Saunders, as well as two counts of attempted first-degree murder for the alleged attempt on the lives of the two men in the vehicle. Following his arrest, Tate was held in the Metro Jail on a $200,000 bond. The case proceeded through the legal system, and on June 4, 2015, Darius Montez Tate was convicted of reckless homicide and attempted first-degree murder.
