In the early morning hours of November 22, 2016, the life of 35-year-old Corey L. Walls was tragically cut short on a street in Kansas City, Missouri. A veteran of the United States Air Force who had served his country for six years in places as distant as Korea and Saudi Arabia, Walls was back in his hometown, a father, son, and brother. His path that morning, near the intersection of St. John and Cypress avenues in the Northeast area, led him into a fatal encounter.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., as Walls was walking, he was approached by an armed man intent on robbery. The assailant demanded his wallet and phone. Before fleeing the scene with Walls' personal belongings, the gunman shot him in the arm and the stomach. Police arrived to find Walls on the sidewalk, gravely wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Despite medical efforts, Corey Walls succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that morning, turning a robbery investigation into a homicide case.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement described the suspect as a Black male of an unknown age. Security camera footage from the area reportedly captured the incident, but the imagery was too blurry to be of significant help in identifying the person responsible for Walls' death. In the years that have followed, his case has grown cold. No arrests have been made, and no suspect has been publicly identified, leaving his family to continue their search for answers and justice for the senseless act of violence that took him from them.
