In the early morning hours of June 8, 2014, a single gunshot shattered the peace in a parking lot in West Jackson, Tennessee, ending the life of 24-year-old Jamar Terrell Rodgers. An African American male, Rodgers was in the parking lot of the Omni Center at around 3 a.m. when witnesses reported hearing his name called out, followed by the sound of several gunshots. A single. 25-caliber bullet struck Jamar in the heart, and he succumbed to the fatal wound. He left behind a grieving family, including his mother, Rosa, his sister, Latoya, and two young children—an 8-year-old daughter and an infant son.
The investigation into the death of Jamar Rodgers quickly identified a person of interest, 25-year-old Corbyn Davis. Davis was no stranger to law enforcement, with a history of arrests for various offenses. Despite the early suspicion, the case grew cold, and for nearly two years, no formal charges were brought against him. The lack of an immediate arrest left Jamar's family in a painful state of uncertainty, desperately seeking answers and justice for their loved one. The case highlighted the challenging and emotionally taxing nature of cold case investigations.
A break in the case finally came in February 2016, when Corbyn Davis was formally charged with the first-degree murder of Jamar Rodgers. During the subsequent trial, eyewitnesses recounted the events of that tragic morning. One witness, who was with Rodgers, later identified Davis from a Facebook photo as the man who approached Jamar just before the shooting. Further testimony came from a co-defendant who was in the car with Davis, stating he saw Davis approach the victim, raise a small pistol, and heard a shot before they fled the scene. Ballistics testing confirmed that the bullet removed from Rodgers' body was fired from a Bryco. 25 pistol that was later recovered. Additionally, a jailhouse informant testified that Davis had made incriminating statements about the crime.
In September 2016, a jury convicted Corbyn Davis for the murder of Jamar Rodgers. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 51 years. An additional four-year sentence was added for a weapons charge, to be served consecutively. While the conviction brought a sense of legal resolution for Jamar's family, his mother and sister expressed that their pain remained and that they still sought to understand the motive behind the senseless act that took him from them.
