On the Fourth of July in 2014, a young man from Athens, Tennessee, named Michael William Tyler Womack, was found dead from a gunshot wound. The 20-year-old male’s life was cut short in what investigators would soon unravel as a burglary gone tragically wrong. His grandmother, Vicki Womack, made the devastating discovery at a neighbor's home, a place where he had gone to do a good deed.
The initial shock and grief of his family quickly turned to a quest for answers as the McMinn County Sheriff's Office, along with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, launched a homicide investigation.
The investigation moved swiftly, and within weeks, three suspects were taken into custody. Thomas Paul Odum, then 48, Martha A. Thompson, 42, and Amanda L. Britnell, 34, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Womack's death. Authorities reported that all three individuals admitted to their involvement in the crime. The narrative that emerged was that the trio was in the process of burglarizing an outbuilding when Womack unexpectedly arrived at the scene. It is believed that Odum, fearing he would be identified, shot Womack, and then all three fled, leaving him to be found by his grandmother.

Thomas Paul Odum faced a jury and was convicted of felony murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, aggravated burglary, theft of property, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Thompson and Amanda L.
