In the late summer of 2014, the life of 45-year-old Kenneth G. Koster of Knoxville, Tennessee, came to a tragic and violent end. On a Monday morning, September 8th, his body was discovered near a residence on Enix Lane in the small town of Caryville. The Campbell County Sheriff's Department swiftly launched an investigation, determining that Koster had been the victim of a homicide.
As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding Koster's death, their attention turned to two
individuals: James Bradley Phillips and Monica Leigh-Ann Briggs. Authorities announced they were seeking the pair for questioning in connection with the murder, cautioning the public that both should be considered armed and dangerous. It was reported that Koster had willingly left with Phillips and Briggs on the preceding Sunday evening and that he had a prior acquaintance with Briggs.
The investigation culminated in the arrest of Monica Leigh-Ann Briggs. During a trial that spanned more than three days, a jury found her guilty of the premeditated first-degree murder and second-degree murder of Kenneth Koster. The court sentenced Briggs to life in prison for the first-degree murder conviction, to be served concurrently with an 18-year sentence for the second-degree murder charge. During the trial, Koster’s mother, Mary Jane Koster, remembered her son as a “fun-loving, honest and hardworking man.” She shared that he had served his country as a Marine and had encountered a period of hardship shortly before his fateful meeting with Briggs. The investigation revealed grim details, noting that Koster's body had been found wrapped in plastic, with a handgun, cleaning supplies, and a rifle discovered nearby. Further evidence, including his bloodied clothing, wallet, and Briggs's wallet, were later found in the pickup truck Briggs had used to flee the scene.
