In the early morning hours of December 8, 2014, the life of 29-year-old Thomas Steven 'T.S.' Thrasher Jr. was tragically cut short in his Oak Ridge, Tennessee, apartment. Police responded to a call of a possible intruder at the Rolling Hills Apartment Complex on West Vanderbilt Drive at approximately 4:40 a.m. to find Thrasher deceased from a gunshot wound. At the time of the incident, he lived in the apartment with his wife and two children.
Authorities immediately deemed the death suspicious and launched a criminal investigation.
For years, the case remained a frustrating puzzle for investigators with the Oak Ridge Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Despite the ongoing efforts, no arrests were made, and the investigation grew cold. Thrasher's family and friends were left to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding his violent death. In an effort to generate new leads, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee authorized a $10,000 reward in April 2021 for information leading to the conviction of those responsible. The case had been a persistent subject of local inquiry, with law enforcement officials confirming its active status over the years but releasing few details to the public.
A significant breakthrough in the long-stalled investigation came in February 2022, more than seven years after the fatal shooting. A grand jury indicted Thrasher's wife, Samantha Anne Hendley, on a charge of first-degree murder. She was arrested and booked into the Anderson County Jail on a one-million-dollar bond. Investigators revealed that Hendley had been a person of interest from the early stages of the investigation.
In July 2023, the case reached its conclusion when Samantha Hendley pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. As a result of her plea agreement, she was sentenced to eight years in prison. With credit for time already served, she became eligible for parole consideration after approximately one year. During the sentencing, Thrasher's family members spoke of their profound and lasting grief, with his mother recounting a chilling conversation in which her son had told her, 'If anything ever happens to me, Sam did it.'
