On a spring night in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 26-year-old Army Sergeant Calvin Wilhite Jr., an African American male, was tragically cut short. On May 24, 2015, Wilhite and his fiancée were walking near Beale Street and the FedExForum. Their evening took a fatal turn when an argument erupted with two men in a greenish-gray Chrysler Sebring.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the couple crossed the street to distance themselves from the men.
However, the driver of the Sebring lured Wilhite back towards the vehicle, at which point the passenger shot him. Wilhite was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind a grieving family and a case that would remain cold for years.
For nearly a decade, the investigation into Wilhite's murder continued, with his family tirelessly seeking justice. A significant breakthrough finally came in the spring of 2024 when new information surfaced, breathing life back into the cold case. This new lead, combined with persistent police work and technological advancements, pointed investigators toward a suspect.
In February 2025, almost ten years after the fatal shooting, authorities arrested Timothy Davis. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Calvin Wilhite Jr. While the arrest brought a measure of relief to Wilhite's family, law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation is not over, as they believe other individuals involved in the murder remain at large. The search for the remaining suspects continues.
