In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that claimed the life of U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Scott Smith, a 26-year-old Caucasian male. On July 16, Smith was at his post at the Naval Operations Support Center when a gunman, later identified as Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, launched an attack. Smith was shot three times in the back, stomach, and arm while reportedly helping fellow service members and their families escape the building.
