In a tragic turn of events that began with a vehicle theft, 20-year-old Jerome Dodson of Memphis, Tennessee, lost his life on December 14, 2015. An African American male, Dodson sustained multiple gunshot wounds in an encounter that blurred the lines between victim and perpetrator. The incident unfolded after Dodson and an accomplice, Demetrius James, were involved in the theft of a GMC Yukon SUV.
The owner of the stolen vehicle, Darrell Wren, discovered his SUV and some designer
handbags were missing and took matters into his own hands. Through Facebook, Wren arranged a meeting with Dodson and James under the pretense of retrieving his property. The rendezvous was set at Oakhaven Park, a location that would soon become a crime scene. Unbeknownst to Dodson and James, Wren had no intention of a simple exchange. He concealed himself in the trunk of his girlfriend's car, armed with a gun, and lay in wait.
As the meeting commenced, Wren sprang from his hiding place and opened fire on Dodson and James. Dodson was struck multiple times, with bullets damaging his spine, lungs, and heart, injuries that proved fatal. The aftermath of the shooting saw the swift arrest of Darrell Wren. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder for Dodson's death, attempted second-degree murder, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. In 2018, a jury found Wren guilty of second-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the deadly confrontation.
