In the midst of a Thursday afternoon, a robbery attempt at a Memphis gas station turned deadly, claiming the life of a young store employee. Abdelshakoor Sider, a 20-year-old male, was working at the At-One Citgo gas station located at the intersection of Dunn Avenue and Cherry Road when the incident unfolded shortly after 12 p.m.
A man, later identified as 22-year-old Koalis Peete, entered the store wearing a mask in an alleged attempt to rob the clerk.
During the course of the robbery, gunfire was exchanged between Sider and the suspect. Sider's father was also present and shot Peete during the confrontation. Tragically, Abdelshakoor Sider sustained fatal injuries during the shootout.
Following the incident, police charged Koalis Peete with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and attempted aggravated robbery. Peete was critically injured during the exchange of gunfire and was transported to the Regional Medical Center. Authorities later clarified that they did not believe another suspect was at large. Peete had a prior criminal record, having pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated burglary and motor vehicle burglary in 2013, for which he served eight months in jail. The family of Abdelshakoor Sider was left to prepare for his funeral in the wake of the violent encounter.
