On the evening of April 3, 2016, a heated argument at the Lakeview Motel on Chapman Highway in South Knoxville, Tennessee, tragically cut short the life of 33-year-old Purnell Nimmons, a Black male. The verbal altercation, which involved a 29-year-old nurse named Danielle Wright, escalated into a physical confrontation.
Following the initial dispute, Wright departed from the motel, only to return a short time later. Upon her return, the conflict resumed, culminating in Wright brandishing a handgun. As Nimmons attempted to flee the scene, Wright shot him in the back. First responders found Nimmons deceased in the front office area of the motel.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Danielle Wright turned herself in to the authorities. She was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, held on a $1 million bond. The case proceeded to a three-day trial where a Knox County jury ultimately convicted Wright of the lesser charge of second-degree murder on April 20, 2017.
On June 8, 2017, Danielle Wright was sentenced for the murder of Purnell Nimmons. As a first-time offender, she faced a prison sentence of 15 to 25 years. Following an appeal, her conviction was affirmed, and she received a sentence of seventeen years of incarceration.
