In a tragic turn of events on a June afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, a family was irrevocably shattered by a shocking act of violence. On June 21, 2016, 24-year-old Michael Walker, a Black male, was shot and killed inside his Hickory Hill home. The stunning and heartbreaking reality of the situation was that the person responsible was his own younger brother, 23-year-old Deandre Walker.
The distressing incident began to unfold when the brothers' mother made a frantic 911 call, reporting
that one of her sons had shot the other. This set in motion a tense standoff with law enforcement. Shortly after his mother's call, Deandre himself contacted 911, confessing to the killing of his brother and expressing remorse by stating, 'I'm a bad person.' The situation escalated when Deandre fired at responding officers, resulting in one officer, Jason Winburn, being grazed in the foot. Fortunately, the officer's injury was not severe, and he was later treated and released from the hospital.
The standoff concluded tragically when Tactical officers entered the residence to find both Michael and Deandre Walker deceased. The investigation determined that after killing his brother, Deandre had turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. A 7-year-old girl who was also in the home at the time was safely evacuated by family members. Authorities later confirmed that neither of the brothers had any prior criminal history in Shelby County. As the perpetrator was also deceased, the case did not result in any arrests or further legal proceedings. The incident left the community and the family mourning the loss of two young men.
