In the small community of Five Points, Tennessee, the life of 36-year-old Curtis Sirmones Jr., an African American man, was tragically cut short on July 26, 2016. A former standout football player, Sirmones was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound near the porch of a residence on Mockerson Road. His death marked a somber day for those who knew him, a man who had once graced the football fields of Loretto High School and Mississippi State University.

County deputies soon had a suspect in custody. Yancey Williams, a 30-year-old resident of Five Points, admitted to authorities that he had shot Sirmones during the course of an argument. This admission led to Williams's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder, and he was subsequently held on a $400,000 bond. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation was a collaborative effort, involving the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, the Loretto Police Department, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The legal process moved forward, and in December of 2016, a Lawrence County Grand Jury indicted Williams on the second-degree murder charge. The case culminated in a trial in March 2018. During the proceedings, the jury was presented with evidence and testimony, which reportedly included items retrieved from an abandoned well in southern Lawrence County. Following the trial, Yancey Williams was convicted of the murder of Curtis Sirmones Jr. and sentenced to life in prison. In January 2020, the Court of Criminal Appeals of Tennessee upheld the conviction and sentence, solidifying the legal conclusion to a violent and senseless act.
