In the quiet town of Springfield, Tennessee, the morning of February 15, 2017, was shattered by the discovery of a young man's body. Demetrius Dantrell Mack, a 25-year-old Black male and a disabled Army veteran, was found slumped over in his vehicle on 21st Avenue East. The car was still running and had come to a rest against a tree, its doors locked and windows up. Responding officers had to force their way into the vehicle, where they and emergency medical services found Mack deceased from a bullet wound. The investigation that followed would unravel a story of a fateful encounter that ended in tragedy.
Investigators quickly determined that Mack had been shot at a nearby location before driving away and losing consciousness. The case, which marked Springfield's first homicide in over two years, led police to an 18-year-old with a recent history of legal troubles. Cameron Boyd, who had been released from jail just a week prior, was identified as a suspect. Police believe the incident may have stemmed from a minor drug transaction that escalated into a robbery and ultimately, Mack's murder. Boyd was reportedly seen in the area just 15 minutes before the shooting occurred.
Within hours of the discovery of Mack's body, Cameron Boyd was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide. Upon his arrest, Boyd was found in possession of a 9mm handgun, the same caliber as the shell casings recovered from the crime scene. As the investigation deepened, a second individual, 20-year-old Etonio Jones, was implicated in the crime. Evidence presented to the Robertson County Grand Jury led to Jones' indictment on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Both Boyd and Jones were held in the Robertson County jail without bond as they awaited further legal proceedings.
