On a harsh winter night in Lyles, Tennessee, the life of 22-year-old Austin Stewart was tragically cut short. On February 19, 2017, Stewart, a male, was shot and killed in an act of violence that also left another individual wounded. The events of that evening marked a grim chapter in the history of Hickman County.
The Hickman County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of the shooting, where they discovered Stewart had sustained fatal injuries.
Another person at the location had also been shot but survived. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was brought in to assist with the ensuing homicide investigation. The inquiry into the violent encounter that claimed a young man's life and injured another became a priority for law enforcement.
In the days that followed, the investigation led to the identification of a suspect. Demontez Coleman, who was 21 years old at the time, was named as the individual responsible for the shooting. After a search, Coleman was located and taken into custody, facing charges for his alleged role in the violent death of Austin Stewart and the injury of the second victim. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide.
