On the evening of July 23, Bailey was in the parking lot of the Austin Homes community when an argument escalated to violence. Multiple gunshots were fired, and Bailey was struck. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, Herman Bailey succumbed to his injuries four days later, on July 27, 2017.
The Knoxville Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation into his death. Detectives learned that there were several witnesses to the shooting, but only one individual remained at the scene to speak with investigators.
