In the early morning hours of March 23, 2017, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. Michael Roby, a 21-year-old Black male from Brooksville, Mississippi, was in the parking lot of The Reserve at Mt. Moriah apartments located in the 5800 block of Benadine Place. An argument had reportedly taken place prior to the fatal encounter that unfolded around 3:10 a.m.
Following the dispute, Michael Roby was shot multiple times.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found him in the parking lot and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Witnesses reported that the shooter fled the scene in a Pontiac G6 with an accomplice.
The Memphis police investigation led to the arrest of 24-year-old Marquez Duncan. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Michael Roby's death. According to a witness who claimed to have been in the car with Duncan, he was the one who shot Roby. Duncan was taken into custody and was scheduled for an arraignment on March 27, 2017. While it was reported that an accomplice was present, Duncan was the only individual charged in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
