In the early hours of a Monday morning in January 2018, the life of 16-year-old Jose Gutierrez was tragically cut short in Antioch, Tennessee. A student at Glencliff High School, the young man was with a group of acquaintances, including 16-year-old Jazmine Wheeler, driving around in the pre-dawn darkness. The group was reportedly looking for cars to burglarize when their activities took a fatal turn.
While they were stopped at the Arbor Knoll Apartments, a single gunshot shattered the
quiet. Gutierrez was struck in the head. In the aftermath, his companions drove him to Southern Hills Medical Center and left him there. From there, he was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but his injury proved too severe, and he died on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
The investigation into the shooting led Metro Police to Jazmine Wheeler. According to her statement to detectives, the shooting was an accident. She claimed she was in the back seat and was attempting to pass a pistol to Gutierrez, who was in the front seat, when the weapon discharged.
Following their investigation, police arrested Wheeler on Saturday, January 20, 2018. She was charged with criminal homicide and unlawful possession of a gun. After her arrest, she was held in juvenile detention.
