Don Jermaine Whitaker, a 25-year-old Black man, died on March 1, 2018, from a gunshot wound sustained during an arranged meeting to purchase a firearm. The events that led to his untimely death unfolded in the 2700 block of Midland Avenue, where Whitaker and his girlfriend had gone with the intention of making a legal gun purchase.
The situation took a dark turn after Whitaker
entered a vehicle, reportedly to complete the transaction. Moments later, he fled from the car and was shot. In a desperate attempt to save his life, he was taken to a nearby fire station with a serious gunshot wound. From there, he was rushed to Regional One Hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved to be fatal. The news of his death sent shockwaves through his community, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the senseless violence that had claimed their loved one. His identical twin brother, Donnie Whitaker, became a voice for the grieving family, speaking out against the violence that had taken his brother and calling for unity within the community.
The Memphis Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, which soon led to a significant development. A 19-year-old woman named Deborah Spencer was arrested and faced serious charges in connection with Whitaker's death. She was charged with first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery. According to police reports, Spencer admitted to her involvement, stating that she and two other men had posted an advertisement to sell a gun and that she was the driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal incident.
