In the spring of 2018, a young woman's life was cut tragically short in Knoxville, Tennessee. On the evening of April 16th, 22-year-old Jessica Leigh Davis was fatally shot in her apartment on Bakertown Road in the west part of Knox County. The initial report to authorities suggested a self-inflicted wound during a heated argument with her ex-boyfriend, but as investigators delved deeper, a much darker narrative began to unfold, revealing a history of violence that culminated in a senseless act
of murder.
The man present at the scene, 25-year-old Jacquiz I. McBee, was not only Davis's ex-boyfriend but also the father of her child. His account of the events that transpired that night painted a picture of a struggle over a handgun, alleging that Davis had pointed the weapon at him before it accidentally discharged, ending her life. However, the evidence collected by the Knox County Sheriff's Office began to contradict his version of the story. The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of domestic abuse, including a prior charge of aggravated assault against Davis in 2016, suggesting a volatile and dangerous relationship.
The turning point in the investigation came from McBee's own digital footprint. A forensic examination of his computer revealed incriminating internet searches, including the chilling query, 'killing someone while on probation.' Further evidence of his attempt to conceal his guilt was found in a letter he had written, instructing someone to alter his search history to make it appear as though he were merely researching the television show 'How to Get Away with Murder.' This calculated attempt to mislead investigators exposed a consciousness of guilt that starkly contrasted with his claims of an accidental shooting.
In November 2020, Jacquiz I. McBee faced a jury of his peers, who ultimately saw through his web of deceit. Presented with the compelling evidence of his violent past and his calculated efforts to cover his tracks, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. The trial, prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys General Kevin Allen and Joanie Stewart, brought a measure of justice for Jessica Davis and her grieving family.
