In the early morning hours of April 22, 2018, the life of 20-year-old Joe Rene Perez Jr. was tragically cut short in a violent outburst at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee. A young man with his life ahead of him, Perez was a customer at the restaurant when a gunman opened fire, shattering the ordinary quiet of the establishment.
Perez was one of four individuals who lost their lives in the senseless attack. He, along with Waffle House employee Taurean C.
Sanderlin, was fatally shot in the restaurant's parking lot. Inside, DeEbony Groves and Akilah DaSilva were also killed. The shooter, armed with an AR-15 style rifle, caused widespread terror and injury before a courageous customer, James Shaw Jr., managed to wrestle the weapon away, preventing further bloodshed.
The perpetrator was identified as Travis Reinking. Following the shooting, Reinking fled the scene, sparking a 34-hour manhunt that ended with his capture. The investigation into the incident revealed a troubled history, including previous encounters with law enforcement.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the legal process began. Reinking was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, among other offenses. His defense team argued that he was not guilty by reason of insanity, citing a history of severe schizophrenia. However, after a trial that included emotional testimony from the victims' families, a jury found Travis Reinking guilty on all counts in February 2022. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In a related case, Reinking's father was later convicted and sentenced for unlawfully providing the firearm to his son.
