On a tragic afternoon in Antioch, Tennessee, the life of 15-year-old Edgar J. 'EJ' Utley, a promising African American freshman and football player at Hillsboro High School, was abruptly cut short. On February 4, 2021, Utley was fatally shot on the front porch of his home on Pointer Court. The events leading to his death began when a 15-year-old female, Trameisha Farris, visited him.
After about ten minutes inside his home, they both stepped out onto the front porch.
Unseen and lying in wait was 16-year-old Wilton Alexander, who was hiding on the porch. As Utley emerged, Alexander ambushed him, firing the fatal shot. Immediately after the shooting, both Alexander and Farris fled the scene, leaving the young football player critically wounded. He was rushed to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The motive for this violent act was believed to be a robbery, possibly involving a gun.
The investigation, aided by surveillance footage that captured the shocking event, quickly identified the two teenagers involved. The video showed Farris, dressed in white, standing at the front door while Alexander, in red, crept around the corner to shoot Utley. Within days, both Wilton Alexander and Trameisha Farris surrendered to authorities and were taken into custody. They were subsequently charged with criminal homicide.
The case brought to light a heartbreaking betrayal of friendship. It was revealed during the trial that EJ Utley and Wilton Alexander had been close friends who grew up playing basketball together. Their mothers were also good friends, adding another layer of devastation for the families involved. In January 2024, a jury found both Wilton Alexander and Trameisha Farris guilty of first-degree murder. Less than three hours of deliberation led to the verdict, and both were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the tragic and senseless death of EJ Utley.
