In the winter of 2020, a young man's life was abruptly ended in a burst of violence that has, to this day, left his community and family searching for answers. Edward Earl Johnson Jr., a 24-year-old Black man, was discovered on the evening of January 29th, lying in the parking lot of the Abbington Heights Apartments on Hickory Hollow Terrace in Antioch, Tennessee.
He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Emergency services were quick to respond to the scene following reports of shots fired just after 9 p.m. Johnson was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. As detectives from the Metro Nashville Police Department began their investigation into the sixth criminal homicide in the city that year, they recovered a handgun near Johnson's body. This weapon was later determined to have been reported stolen during a residential burglary in November of the previous year.
Despite the discovery of the firearm, the motive behind the shooting of Edward Earl Johnson Jr. remains shrouded in mystery. Law enforcement officials have been actively investigating the case, urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in piecing together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
