In the late hours of a spring evening in Clarksville, Tennessee, the life of 21-year-old Julian Torres was tragically cut short. On May 19, 2018, police officers on patrol heard the sound of gunshots near Bob's Discount Tobacco on Providence Boulevard. Behind the store, they discovered Torres suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation into the death of Julian Torres led to the identification of two
suspects, Timothy Ogburn, 27, and Rasheem Lewis, also 27. In June 2018, Ogburn was extradited from Oak Grove, Kentucky, and charged with premeditated murder in connection with Torres's death. Later, in October of the same year, Lewis was also indicted on a charge of first-degree murder. Both men were booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Ogburn was also a suspect in the separate killing of Tanesha Hardy, which occurred just days after Torres was shot.
The case against Ogburn and Lewis proceeded to a four-day trial in July 2021. The prosecution presented its case, which included the testimony of a key witness, Jamonte Pinkston, who was reportedly in the car with the two defendants on the night of the shooting. Pinkston testified that he saw Ogburn shoot Torres. However, the defense raised questions about the witness's credibility, pointing out that his story had changed multiple times.
After nearly five hours of deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty for both Timothy Ogburn and Rasheem Lewis in the murder of Julian Torres. The decision was met with emotion from the family of Torres, who had waited three years for a different outcome. While Ogburn was acquitted in the Torres case, he was later convicted in May 2022 for the murder of Tanesha Hardy.
