On an April evening in 2019, the life of 36-year-old Brodes Calvin Perry, a Black/African American male, was cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the quiet of his Collierville, Tennessee, apartment complex. The tragic events of April 4th unfolded when a woman named Latoshia Daniels, an acquaintance from Perry's past in Little Rock, Arkansas, arrived at the home he shared with his wife.
The visit, initially seemingly cordial, took a dark and unexpected turn.
As Daniels was leaving, she pulled out a handgun and opened fire, repeatedly shooting Perry. His wife was also wounded in the attack as she tried to shield her husband. According to his wife's testimony, Daniels uttered the words "You broke my heart" during the fatal assault. When police arrived at the Meridian Park Apartments, they found Perry with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly centered on Latoshia Daniels, who was identified as a licensed social worker and anger management specialist. It was revealed that she and Perry, an executive pastor at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, had been involved in a secret romantic relationship. The affair began when Perry was a pastor in Little Rock. On the day of the shooting, Daniels purchased the murder weapon in Arkansas before driving to the Perrys' apartment in Tennessee.
Daniels was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. During her trial, the defense argued that Perry had manipulated Daniels and that she had intended to take her own life in front of him, not harm him. Daniels testified that she didn't remember firing the gun. However, the prosecution presented evidence of premeditation, including the gun purchase on the day of the murder. Ultimately, a jury found Latoshia Daniels guilty of second-degree murder and reckless endangerment for the shooting of Perry's wife.
