On the morning of April 15, 2019, Casey Jeanette Daugherty, 32, a White woman, was rushed to Starr Regional Medical Center’s Athens campus after suffering a gunshot wound, but she did not survive. Deputies with the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office were called to the emergency room shortly after 7 a.m. on a report that the shooting had been accidental, setting off an investigation that began not at a crime scene, but under the harsh lights and urgent pace of a hospital arrival.
