An argument in the early morning hours in the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, led to the shooting death of 24-year-old Darvis Gates on November 24, 2019. The incident, which also resulted in the wounding of his twin brother, Jarvis Gates, occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the 1700 block of Martha Drive.
According to investigators, an argument broke out between the Gates brothers and another man. Following the dispute, the man emerged from a nearby house with a firearm and opened fire on the unarmed siblings. Darvis Gates was struck multiple times and was discovered deceased near a driveway. His brother, Jarvis, was also shot multiple times and was found wounded in a nearby yard. The gunfire also endangered two other bystanders, who were not injured.
In connection with the shooting, authorities arrested Michael A. Crawford, who was 24 at the time. A grand jury later indicted Crawford on multiple charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Darvis Gates, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and three counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Crawford was subsequently jailed on a $500,000 bond.
