In a tragic turn of events on December 29, 2019, 19-year-old Joshua Haley, a Black male, and his 20-year-old brother, Christian Haley, were fatally shot in their Knoxville, Tennessee, apartment. The incident, which took place at the Rocky Top Apartments on Bedrock Way, was the result of a planned robbery for marijuana that escalated into a violent and deadly encounter.
The Knoxville Police Department responded to a call around 5:41 p.m. and found the two brothers deceased at the scene.
Joshua had been shot five times, and his brother Christian was shot eight times. The investigation quickly led to the identification of three suspects who were subsequently arrested in connection with the double homicide. The individuals taken into custody were 33-year-old James Edward Allen, a 17-year-old, and a 16-year-old.
During interviews with investigators, the suspects admitted their intention was to rob the Haley brothers of marijuana, armed with firearms. The situation inside the residence tragically spiraled out of control, leading to the fatal shootings. All three suspects faced serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated robbery.
James Edward Allen was later convicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder. He received two consecutive life sentences, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life in prison. One of the juvenile suspects also pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The third suspect was also charged and was set to be prosecuted as an adult for his role in the deadly robbery. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of gun violence and the illegal drug trade, leaving a family and a community to mourn the loss of two young lives.
