In the spring of 2020, the life of 15-year-old Tyerell Dyshaun Jones was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on a street in Memphis, Tennessee. A freshman at Melrose High School, Tyerell was known for his love of sports, particularly football and track. The young male was traveling in a car with three other teenagers on the night of May 6, 2020, when the unthinkable occurred.
As they drove, another vehicle began to follow them closely, its headlights glaring.
The pursuit culminated in the 4000 block of Barron Avenue, just east of Getwell Road. The occupants of the trailing vehicle opened fire on the car carrying the four teens. The driver of the targeted car lost control, crashing into a parked vehicle. In the aftermath of the shooting, Tyerell Dyshaun Jones and 18-year-old Steven Richard Goggans were found inside the bullet-riddled car, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The two other teenagers in the car were injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The investigation into the double homicide continued for over two years. A breakthrough in the case came in the summer of 2022. As part of a 30-day, multi-agency fugitive roundup called Operation North Star, law enforcement officials arrested 22-year-old Trevon Harris in June. His arrest brought a significant development to the investigation of the deaths of Tyerell Jones and Steven Goggans.
Following his arrest, Trevon Harris was indicted in July 2022 on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of the two teenagers. He also faced two counts of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the other two teens in the car.
