In the early hours of a September morning in Cordova, Tennessee, a dispute at a construction site escalated into a fatal encounter for William L. Scott. The 38-year-old man was working as a supervisor on Appling Road on September 18, 2020, when an argument broke out between him and a construction worker, Marcus D. Williams. The disagreement took a dark turn as Williams reportedly left the scene, only to return a short time later armed with a gun.
According to investigators, upon his return to the worksite, Williams was confronted by Scott, who informed him that firearms were not permitted on the premises. In response, Williams allegedly began shooting at his supervisor. Scott attempted to flee to safety, but his efforts were in vain as Williams continued to fire, even after Scott had collapsed. The shooting proved to be fatal, and William L. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Marcus D. Williams fled the construction site. However, his freedom was short-lived as law enforcement officials were able to locate and arrest him at his home in the Raleigh area shortly after the incident. Initially, Williams, who was 27 at the time of the incident, was charged with several felonies, including first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
More than a year later, in October 2021, the case moved forward when a Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Marcus D. Williams for the murder of his former team leader. The indictment formally charged the then 28-year-old with first-degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm involving a crime of violence. Following the indictment, Williams was held in the Shelby County Jail.
