In the early morning hours of October 23, 2020, a heated verbal argument between a young couple in Knoxville, Tennessee, ended in tragedy. Sage Alice Zhi McElroy, a 21-year-old woman, was fatally shot by her boyfriend, Caelan Greenfield. The incident occurred on Gleason Drive, where McElroy was later found deceased inside her vehicle from a chest wound. She was of mixed ethnicity.
Immediately following the shooting, Greenfield, who was 22 years old at the time, fled the scene.
However, he returned a short time later and attempted to leave again in a silver Hyundai. Law enforcement officers who had responded to the scene pursued and quickly apprehended him. During the subsequent investigation, Greenfield admitted to shooting McElroy, stating that their argument had escalated to that fatal point.
Following his confession and the evidence gathered by the Knoxville Police Department, Caelan Greenfield was charged with first-degree murder and evading arrest. He was booked into the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $250,000 bond. The case highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence and drew significant attention due to the youth of both the victim and the alleged perpetrator. The legal proceedings against Greenfield are ongoing.
