In early February 2021, the life of Victor Danny Letner, a 33-year-old man from Rockwood, Tennessee, was tragically cut short in a remote area of East Knox County. Letner, described by those who knew him as a big-hearted and caring individual who had previously worked as a nursing home caregiver, was last seen on February 7, 2021. His body was discovered on February 17, 2021, on Kodak Road, where he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The subsequent investigation into his death revealed a grim story of a planned robbery that escalated to murder.
The events leading to Letner's death began when he drove to Knoxville to meet 24-year-old Kendra Ivey for a prearranged sexual encounter. According to Ivey's statement to investigators, a dispute arose over the agreed-upon payment. She then instructed Letner to drive her to a secluded location on Kodak Road, where her boyfriend, 23-year-old Charlie Richard 'Rico' Martinez, was waiting with the intention of robbing him. Upon their arrival, Martinez allegedly shot Letner. Ivey claimed that they then fled the scene, splitting the small amount of money they had taken from him.
Following an investigation, Kendra Ivey was arrested and charged with felony murder. Authorities also sought Charlie Richard Martinez for questioning. Martinez's 46-year-old mother, Diana Jeanty, was implicated as well, facing charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact. It was reported that she assisted her son with a gunshot wound to his leg that he sustained during the struggle and drove Letner's vehicle to Virginia, where she abandoned it in a parking lot. Both Ivey and Martinez were eventually charged with felony murder, first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and other related offenses.
The legal proceedings concluded with convictions for the main perpetrators. Charlie Richard Martinez was found guilty of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery. A particularly chilling detail that emerged during the trial was that Martinez had written song lyrics describing the shooting, his flight from the scene, and the destruction of evidence. He received an automatic life sentence for the murder. His girlfriend, Kendra Ivey, was also convicted for her role in the crime.
