On a warm July day in 2021, tragedy struck in the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis, forever altering the lives of a local family. Seventeen-year-old Kheion Key, a young man with his life ahead of him, was fatally wounded in a hail of gunfire on July 20th. He was visiting a friend on Air Street when the unthinkable happened. In a sudden eruption of violence, occupants of four separate vehicles began shooting, turning the residential street into a chaotic and dangerous scene.
Investigators
with the Memphis Police Department believe the incident was gang-related and that Kheion Key was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. The sheer scale of the violence was staggering, with detectives recovering more than 100 shell casings from the scene of the shooting. Kheion was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries. His mother, Shan Hester, was left to grapple with the devastating and sudden loss of her son.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Memphis Police Department launched an intensive investigation. While they were able to recover three of the four vehicles believed to have been involved in the shooting, the individuals responsible for Kheion Key's death have remained at large. To date, no arrests have been announced in connection with the murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and active investigation, with authorities continuing to seek information from the public that could lead to the apprehension of those who so senselessly cut short a young life.
