In the late summer of 2021, the life of a young Black/African American man, Malachi Fondren, was tragically cut short at the age of 21. On the morning of Saturday, August 28, 2021, Fondren was fatally shot at the Stewarts Ferry Apartments located on Stones River Cove in Nashville, Tennessee. The incident unfolded when Fondren was visiting a female acquaintance at the apartment complex.
An investigation into the shooting revealed that the woman's former boyfriend, Deandre Dean, arrived at
the location while Fondren was there. An interaction occurred between the two men outside the apartment, which tragically escalated to the point of Fondren being shot. After the shooting, Dean fled the scene, leaving Fondren with fatal injuries.
The day following the shooting, Deandre Dean, then 27 years old, surrendered to authorities by coming to the police headquarters. He was subsequently interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives and taken into custody. As a result of the investigation, Dean was charged with criminal homicide for the death of Malachi Fondren.
