In the spring of 2022, the life of 27-year-old Darrius Vance, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. On the evening of April 3rd, Vance was at the Ascend at Goodlett apartment complex when he was fatally shot. The incident prompted an investigation by the Memphis Police Department, which quickly led to a suspect.
Within a day of the shooting, investigators identified Martavious Lyles, then 23 years old, as the primary suspect.
Lyles was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Vance's death. According to police reports, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two men.
Further investigation revealed a volatile history between Lyles and his girlfriend, who was also the mother of his child. Court records indicated that just a month prior to the shooting, Lyles had been arrested for assaulting the same woman. In that incident, he reportedly threatened her and physically attacked her, resulting in charges of domestic assault.
