The 26-year-old father of five was out with relatives on April 10, 2022, to celebrate the life of a recently deceased family member. As the group was leaving a venue called The Green Room at approximately 2 a.m., an argument erupted between them and another group of people.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a
chaotic shootout, unfolding near a police substation in the presence of several officers. In the midst of the gunfire, three Memphis police officers discharged their weapons, firing at one of the individuals involved in the shooting. When the violence subsided, Taquan Smith was found fatally wounded and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were also injured in the incident, both of whom were listed in critical but stable condition. One of the injured was a man taken into police custody that night.
