On a late spring evening in Marion County, Tennessee, the life of 55-year-old Michael Monroe Woods Jr. of Columbia, Missouri, came to a tragic and unexpected end. On Friday, May 27, 2022, Woods was found deceased in the bathroom of a rest area located on the eastbound side of Interstate 24.
Authorities were called to the scene around 6 p.m. Central Standard Time, where they discovered Woods with a fatal gunshot wound.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, along with the Marion County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, quickly launched a homicide investigation.
The investigation soon pointed to a suspect close to the victim. Information gathered by law enforcement identified Woods's son, Micah E. McElmurry of Decatur, Illinois, as the individual responsible for the shooting. McElmurry was taken into custody that same night. He was subsequently charged with one count of Criminal Homicide and booked into the Marion County Jail, where he was held without bond.
